Charleston hosts several festivals throughout the year including Taste of Charleston, the Cooper River Bridge Run, the Charleston Food and Wine Festival, Charleston Fashion Week, and the Holiday Festival of Lights. However, the biggest event of the city is Spoleto Festival USA which is a seventeen day art festival that is internationally recognized as America’s best performing arts festival. The theater in Charleston is very important as the city is home to America’s first theater, The Dock Street Theater. Two major institutions of higher learning are located in Charleston. The first is College of Charleston which is one of the oldest colleges in the country and The Citadel which is a military college that is best known for its Corps of Cadets. Both of the colleges’ sports teams compete in Division I athletics. You can catch a professional game of the Charleston RiverDogs, a minor league Baseball team play at the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and are currently affiliated with the New York Yankees.
